Blackjack Rules

Introduction

Blackjack is an extremely fun game to play and one that many people have actually been able to make a living from playing it. For most people though they just enjoy the fun and excitement of the game itself and don’t mind losing a little money in the process of playing the game. One of the things that really draw people to blackjack as a game is that it is an extremely easy game to learn. Both the rules and the optimal strategy for blackjack is extremely easy to learn and this is what makes it one of the most popular casino games around.

Basic Blackjack Rules

As previously mentioned the rules for blackjack are very simple. A blackjack table can typically seat up to six or eight people and it is important to note that the people at the table do not play against each other. Each person is dealt a hand and their hand is compared against the dealer’s hand (otherwise known as the house’s hand) in order to see whose is better.

The game starts by the player putting forward the amount of money that they wish to bet on this hand. Once each player at the table has done that, the cards are then dealt out. Two cards are dealt face up to each player and one card is dealt face down to the dealer and one card face up. Play then starts with the person on the dealer’s left and they have the option to decide whether to hit or stay.

The goal of the game is to achieve a score as near to a total of twenty-one points without exceeding that number; face cards (king, queen, or jack) have a value of ten while all aces are valued at either a one or eleven. All other card counts are valued the same as their face value. Once all the players have elected to stay or have busted (their hand value has gone over 21) the dealer then goes through the same process. The rules of most blackjack games are that the dealer must hit to 17 and stand on anything 17 or over. The dealer also does not have the option to double down or split pairs. Every player that has beaten the dealer’s score wins twice their bet back while every player that is under the dealer’s score loses their bet. Tied hands result in a push and the players are returned their initial bet. Should the dealer’s hand go over 21 and bust then each player at the table that has not busted wins twice their bet back.

Advanced Blackjack Rules

There are a few advanced blackjack rules that players should be aware of when playing blackjack. For starters if a player is dealt two cards of the same value then they have the option to perform a split. This allows them to split their one hand into two hands for double the bet and be dealt two additional cards to complete each hand. They then play each of their hands separately. An additional option a person has on each hand is to double down. A double down allows them to double their bet and be dealt one more card to complete their hand. If a player is dealt blackjack (an ace plus any face card) then they are paid 1.5 times their bet.
